Mikki and Bob Garrels came to Big Rapids in 1988 when Bob accepted a call to serve Immanuel Lutheran Church as Pastor, Serving from 1988-2008. Mikki worked at Ferris State University in the Writing Center, and also taught English and study skills classes.
Bob has written agreat deal of music, worsip material, drama, short stories and newspaper articles in his gorty years as a Lutheran pastor, much of it for use in the church, but much also for community and non-religious use.
Mikki, the love of Bob's life for fifty three and half years of marriage and mother of their four lovely daughters, died in December of 2017. Bob has often remarked, "For the most part, my artistic work should have two names attatched, Mikki and Bob Garrels. She was not a professional musician, but she had more constructive criticism of my work than anyone else ever."
Mikki came into her own as a writer in the last fifteen years of her life. She joined a writers' group and immediately was fascinated not only with editing others' writing, but writing her own material as well. She had many articles and stories published in The Pioneer, and one year before her death, finished her magnum opus, a 400 page volume entitled A History of the First 125 Years of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, Michigan (1874-1999).
In this program Bob and some of his musical and literary friends will treat the audience to an artistic journey. Included will be the reading of several of Mikki's pieces and performances of Bob's vocal piano compositions.
